Everyone's aware of the situation in Tahrir and other cities around Egypt right now.  The protests are geographically confined to quite small areas at present, and life is pretty normal in most other areas, albeit somewhat economically depressed.

Regulations are changing from 1st January 2012

Egypt is a non-approved country and so until that date, pets are required to spend 6 months in quarantine on entering the UK.

From 1st January 2012, this is changing, but you must make sure you follow all the rules exactly.

I had a great day of sensory input yesterday riding the big old Egyptian buses and the metro and mooching around the ancient market streets full of traditional spices, oils, fruits and modern Chinese cheapo rubbish! All the mosque azzans going of at slightly different times! Cacophony! Such contrasts!

Anyway, I found this handy on-line Mecca finder.  It uses Google maps and you have to move the map so the place you are is under the red line.

Yesterday, a friend, her son and I made a trip out to Wadi Rayan, in the Fayoum area, about 1.5 hours drive out from Cairo (Giza side).



Wadi Rayan is one of Egypt’s ‘protectorates’.  These are approximately the same as Britain’s National Parks – designed to preserve or encourage natural habitats. Regulations may be different from other countries – in fact I have heard tell that you can bring them excess baggage from many countries.  This is NOT the case from the UK!
